Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is the sixth Metal Gear game directed by Hideo Kojima and is set five years after the events of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, the story centers around a prematurely aged Solid Snake, now known as Old Snake, as he goes on one last mission to assassinate his nemesis Liquid Snake, who now inhabits the body of his former henchman Revolver Ocelot under the guise of Liquid Ocelot, before he takes control of the Sons of the Patriots, an A.I. system that controls the activities of PMCs worldwide. The game received universal acclaim, garnering perfect reviews and Game of the Year awards from several major gaming publications, including GameSpot, which claimed that the game was "technically flawless". The game has been considered one of the best games of the seventh generation of console gaming and among the greatest of all time. Its release caused a boost in sales of the PlayStation 3, where it sold over six million copies worldwide.

Configuration

Options that deviate from RPCS3's default settings and provide the best experience with this title are listed below.

GPU configuration

Setting Option Notes
Framelimit 60 Cutscenes, specifically pre-recorded cutscenes, are difficult to skip if the FPS is too high. When pausing to skip a cutscene it unpauses very quickly on its own. Capping the FPS to 60 fixes this issue.
ZCULL accuracy Relaxed Improves performance.
Write color buffers On Fixes bright scenes while in-game, but expect a small performance hit.

Advanced configuration

Recommended patches

Game patches are available through the RPCS3 Patch Manager. To enable them, right-click a game in RPCS3 then select "Manage Game Patches". Game Patches are created by RPCS3's community, and can alter how a game runs. More information can be found here.

Known Issues

Freezes/softlocks

  • The game is very unstable and will frequently crash within seconds without a special patch outlined in the Special Notes section below.

Precompilation Bug

  • Issue 12320: Initial release versions of the game (1.00) updated to 2.00 will ignore precompiled modules. It's recommended to disable PPU/SPU LLVM Precompilation in Advanced Tab to avoid this and just play the game, it'll compile in each loading screen throughout the game. Digital, 25th Anniversary and Legacy Collection versions of the game aren't affected by this.

Missing audio

  • Issue 10148: To fix this problem, the solution is to downgrade RPCS3 to this version by copy pasting the contents of the archive to your current RPCS3 folder. After downgrading, delete the gamedata folder for the game (/dev_hdd0/game/YOURGAMESERIALHERE), relaunch the game, let it reinstall the gamedata, then finally when that's finished, close the game and update RPCS3 back to the latest version.

Missing character models throughout the game

  • If some character models start to disappear in certain parts of the early-game, this can be resolved by setting the SPU Xfloat accuracy to Accurate, but this will greatly hurt performance and audio, do not use this setting unless absolutely required

Special Notes

  • Be sure to enable the following Canary patches: cellSpurs urgent commands hack (mitigates freezes), Crash fix (addresses crashes related to error code 0x68). Canary patches like these need to be added manually then enabled via RPCS3's patch manager. You'll find instructions on how to apply canary patches here. Note that the cellSpurs patch is only compatible with PS3 Firmware versions 4.87 to 4.91. There's also a canary patch Flickering textures fix, consider enabling this too if you're experiencing this issue. Though it should be noted that this particular patch is known to cause crashes for some users, if you're experiencing them avoid using it.
  • Previously we recommended adjusting VBlank to improve performance in this game, you no longer have to do that. Now you can simply enable the Unlock FPS patch in patch manager to get the same outcome.

Workaround for non-PlayStation controllers

The game has a segment requiring use of the SIXAXIS tilt functionality, which is currently only usable with actual PlayStation controllers. You may be able to work around this on a non-PlayStation controller, such as an Xbox controller, by moving the right analog stick in circles when the game tells you to tilt/shake the controller.
