In Beat Hazard Ultra the player controls a small spaceship that defends itself from other ships and space debris. The music played during gameplay controls the speed and intensity of the game. It also includes an upgrades system; you earn ranks by accumulating score, and then you can unlock perks to provide different benefits, like better score multipliers, or even a couple of special weapons.

There are four main gamemodes: Standard mode, in which you select a track to play. Survival mode, where you select a track and then try to survive as long as possible. Boss Rush mode, similar to survival, but against bosses only. Finally, Relaxation mode exists as an unranked mode where you are unable to die or fail the song.
